Pharmaceutical chemistry, or medicinal chemistry, is an interdisciplinary discipline at the intersection of chemistry and pharmacy. This combined field in pharma research and development focuses on identifying, synthesizing, and developing drug products.
Pharmaceutical science involves various interdisciplinary fields such as organic chemistry, computational chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, physical chemistry, and molecular biology. New chemical entities in this field can be small organic molecules, such as atorvastatin, flavonoids, tetrapyrroles, clopidogrel, and more, as well as biologics, including infliximab, erythropoietin, insulin glargine, antibodies, hormones, etc.
